Simplicity rearranged

unmonetizable content since 1997

Come quick, Timmy fell down the well!

It seems the failsons and privileged dullards running what’s left of the US government got their paws on a military laser designed to knock threatening drones out of the sky on a battlefield. They gleefully (I assume) set out to use their shiny new toy.

They identified a drone threatening the El Paso, Texas airspace! Oh no! They acted fast, as Very Important People certainly do…right? No time (or ability) to really think it through. They aimed their ray gun and zapped! They closed the airspace immediately, for weeks! Can’t be too careful; the Bad Guys are coming!!!

Now, the people who used to run the US government were a different breed; they had procedures, and acted with measured consideration as well as swiftness. If a situation might call for closing an airspace, there were agencies to communicate and cooperate with. If a situation might call for using a military weapon within the US, it was something to be done with care as well as all deliberate speed.

Not the present bunch. They piled out of their clown car and in a melee of confused, excited chaos, they just pushed buttons on their new gadgets. You can easily imagine them actually jumping for joy.

Of course, the whole thing was just another screwup. They shot down a balloon that had escaped somebody’s birthday party. There was no drone, no Bad Guys, no danger, no threat. They shuffled their feet, somebody managed to cancel the airspace closing order, and hoped that nobody would notice. As a group, they do things like that all the time. Their one trick, which they also use all the time, is to gin up some new crisis, emergency, scandal, or complaint they think will attract everyone’s attention instead.

I think what they’re running into lately is that the rest of us are not as stupid as they are. Our mental facilities have not been dulled by lifelong privilege. The rest of us have always needed to actually earn our achievements; we haven’t had everything just handed to us. I would say the bumblefucks are learning this, not just “running into it.” But that assumes they’re capable of learning. Early in life they were capable of that, of course. But I think these aging plutes have probably lost the ability to learn anything.

About Me

I’m Pete Harbeson, a writer located near Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to writing my own content, I’ve learned to translate for my loquacious and opinionated pup Chocolate Bossypaws. I shouldn’t be surprised, but she mostly speaks in doggerel. You can find her contributions tagged with Chocolatiana.

Check out my other blog, Techlimitics, where I’m grappling with the nature of simplicity.
