It’s the beginning of Black History Month. The month was first commemorated in 1970 at Kent State University. It rose to official US recognition in 1976 when President Gerald Ford made it part of the United States Bicentennial year. It’s now also celebrated in Canada and Germany.
February is also American Heart Month in the US, LGBT History Month in the UK, and don’t forget National Bird-Feeding Month in the US.
