Nasty Suicide

Today is the birthday of…I’m not making this up…Nasty Suicide. Nasty is a Finnish musician who was one of the cofounders of Hanoi Rocks, in 1979. That band broke up in 1985, and Suicide formed The Suicide Twins with Andy McCoy, and at the same time founded The Cherry Bombz.

You may be surprised to learn that Nasty Suicide is not Nasty’s birth name. He was born Jan-Markus Senfors on February 27, 1963. He played guitar, bass, and sang in a number of bands in several genres, including glam, hard rock, and punk — and you might notice that in 1979, when he cofounded Hanoi Rocks, he was just 16. He dropped out of high school to become a musician.

The music thing didn’t last, though. In the mid 1990s his band Demolition 23 broke up because Nasty retired from music and went back home to Finland. He was in his early 30s, but nevertheless returned to his studies and graduated from high school. He went on to become…and once again I’m not making this up…a pharmacist. He’s currently working at a drug company in Finland. As recently as 2010 (which isn’t that recent, but anyway) he made a guest appearance with Michael Monroe, who had also been in Demolition 23.

It’s not clear whether Jan-Markus Senfors goes by his pseudonym Nasty Suicide in his new career.
