Simplicity rearranged

unmonetizable content since 1997

Pre-Automation

Pre-automation is a business model. Probably a secretive one. The idea is that a massive organization, especially one aiming to be a monopolistic platform, might employ large, outsourced labor forces. Think “gig workers.” At the same time, the organization would invest in developing the tools to replace these workers with in-house systems and machines.

Does this ring a bell? It should. Think about Amazon, particularly its delivery business, and Uber. Here’s an academic paper about it by Janet Vertesi, of Princeton, et al.

This article is closely related. It’s about how “disruption” in the mouths of tech bros is another word for theft.

About Me

I’m Pete Harbeson, a writer (among other things) located near Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to writing my own content, I’ve learned to translate for my loquacious and opinionated pup Chocolate Bossypaws. No surprise, she mostly speaks in doggerel. You can find her contributions tagged with Chocolatiana.

Check out my other blog, Techlimitics, where I’m grappling with the nature of simplicity. You can also find some of my minor software projects at GitHub. Nothing very impressive. I mostly write tiny utilities in Python.

I find myself suddenly de-corporatized (their choice, not mine). To help keep the lights on, buy me a coffee!
